(0:00) I’m Enrique Latoison, this video is brought to you by Commentary Creations, I’m your 3 minute lawyer.
(0:10) Today we’re talking about something pretty fun. What do you have to do to become an attorney? I get asked these questions all the time. As being an attorney, a fun part of my job
(0:20) is being a mentor to younger kids, I like to call them kids now, students who are coming up who want to get into the legal field.
(0:30) I love being an attorney and I think it is a great profession and a great job. This is going to be the 1st of a 3-part series, the 1st part being “how do I get into law school?”.
(0:40) “What do I need to get into law school?”, the 2nd part is going to be what do you do when you are in law school, and the 3rd part, believe it or not, what do you do once you get out of law school?
(0:50) All of those are hard questions to ask and to answer. So, today we are actually going to have a guest, Caileigh Maull,
(1:00) and she is actually in the process of studying for the LSAT, so we are going to talk to her about what she is doing in that process. But let’s get started with this, one of the questions I get asked all the time is what major
(1:10) should I major in to become an attorney? And I tell you, years ago, maybe 20-30 years ago, prelaw was the only thing you could major in.
(1:20) Now it’s much different. Law schools like a variety of people majoring in different subjects. There isn’t an actual go-to,
(1:30) I must major in. I will tell you, you should be good at English, you should be good at reading, because there is plenty of that in becoming an attorney and you have to be able to do those things well. You also could be good at the sciences and other things but,
(1:40) at least English, History, Government, Political Science, these are classes that you should take. 2nd part is you should try to get a GPA
(1:50) that is at least a 3.2-3.3 or higher in your undergrad to get that bachelor’s degree. Once you do that, and you graduate and get your bachelor’s degree,
(2:00) the next step is the dreaded LSAT, the L-S-A-T, that everyone has to take, in order to get into law school. So, let’s talk about that right now.
(2:10) Today we have our first guest, which is Caileigh Maull. We actually had Slothy in our retail video, which was a stuffed animal. So, Caileigh has just graduated from college, and she is in the process of
(2:20) going to law school. So, let me start with this, Caileigh where did you go to undergrad at? I attended Temple University. Okay and when did you graduate?
(2:30) I graduated in 2022. What are you doing now as you have graduated from undergrad? Right now, I am enrolled in a prep course for the LSAT.
(2:40) There are alot of prep courses out there to help you prepare for the LSAT. I am enrolled in the Blueprint LSAT prep course, and
(2:50) I do weekly exams and questions every single day, just to you know, really prepare, and make sure that I get a solid score on the LSAT. And what does LSAT stand for by the way?
(3:00) LSAT stands for, Law School Admission Test. Okay, and that is what you are working on now, when do you take that test? I take
(3:10) that test in Feb. Okay, Alright. And we are obviously wishing you the best of luck in that test Thank you. Okay. So, this is Caileigh and this is what she is doing right now to
(3:20) get ready to go into law school. Okay so, what do we need to do to get into law school? Just a Recap. You need to get a bachelor’s degree, okay? You need to at least
(3:30) have a 3.2-3.2 GPA. You got to show the law schools that you are able to work hard and be a good student. You need to make sure you are strong in some field such as
(3:40) English, and writing, and reading, and political science. You don’t need to actually major in those things. You don’t want to get a F in Writing and reading
(3:50) and get an A in math. It is not going to look good for law school. Once you graduate and you get that bachelor’s degree, you are halfway there. Then the next point is the LSAT
(4:00) Which you get your LSAT score, along with your GPA from your bachelor’s degree, and then you apply to law school. When people say what do I got to do to become
(4:10) a lawyer, the 1st thing I say is you got to get that bachelor’s degree & you need to study for that LSAT, & I definitely recommend taking a course because it is helpful. This is part 1 of a 3-part series.
