MUNDELEIN, IL - On January 17th, 2020 at 10:30PM, a Mundelein Police Officer observed a stationary vehicle with fresh damage on Allanson Road. After pulling over, the officer spoke to the suspect who asked for a "jump" in an attempt to drive his car home. The suspect then admitted to drinking earlier and claimed that he was on his way back to the bar to retrieve his license which was left there earlier in the evening on accident.
The suspect was eventually moved to a location where snow had been cleared to perform a field sobriety test. Following a lengthy discussion with the suspect, the officer began to administer the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. During the test, the suspect was observed having lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes, and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes. The officer further observed the suspect to be swaying and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect started before the officer finished his instructions, had difficulty staying in the starting position, and made an improper turn.
During the one leg stand test, the suspect swayed while balancing, raised his arms for balance, and put his foot down multiple times during the exercise. Following the conclusion of the field sobriety test, the suspect provided a preliminary breath alcohol sample which read .166%. This is above two times the legal limit of .08% breath alcohol content to drive in the State of Illinois. He was then arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and taken to the Mundelein Police Department for further DUI processing.
