There are billboards and commercials everywhere saying you should hire an attorney if you're hurt in an accident. But should you? Well, maybe. We'll explain.
HERE"S AN OVERVIEW:
When you've been injured in an accident there are three types of financial compensation you might be entitled to:
- MEDICAL BILLS: This one is pretty obvious. If there are medical bills those should be addressed
- LOST WAGES: If you can't work than you may not get paid. You can be compensated for that
- PAIN & SUFFERING: This one is harder to put a number in. You have experienced some pain and suffering from injuries. The insurance company will likely want to put a number on that and compensate you for it.
Sometimes people choose to have an attorney help work with the insurance company to come to agreement about compensation.
Our advice is to only use an attorney if the insurance company isn't following through with their side of the process. The insurance company should be communicating with you throughout the process.
VERY IMPORTANT: No money will be paid out until the end of the process. This can be frustrating and confusing but is how it works.
