In todays video I am going to walk you through the United States Patent and Trademark Offices Online Filing system to show you how to file a trademark online without an attorney. But first I have to say that I don’t actually recommend doing this. And I have a few more caveats that people should know before filing a trademark online. I respect your time so I’ll put a timestamp in the video so you can skip straight to the tutorial. But I highly recommend listening to this first.

Second, I do not recommend or endorse filing a trademark without an attorney. Intellectual property a very complicated area of law. Also, a comprehensive trademark search and legal opinion should be done before filing a Trademark. The Trademark process can take anywhere from 6 month’s to a year. By filing without an attorney you are exposing yourself to a lot more risk.
Thirdly, you might be wondering why I am showing people how to do this for free if I get paid to do it myself. And that’s a good question. I have a few reasons for that.
For one, the USTPO has a guide on their website that shows how to do it. So it’s not like I’m revealing some big secret. Two, I’m not actually teaching you how to do what I do. The value of an attorney doesn’t come from knowing how to use an online filing system. I’m currently training my paralegal to do this out for me so I don’t have to do it. The value I provide to clients comes from understanding Trademark law and helping my clients protect their intellectual property.
Two, by showing people how to do this I’m showing people that I know how to do it. And the people that want to hire an attorney will hire me. The people that don’t want to hire an attorney won’t hire me. And that’s great. I built my real estate law practice by showing landlords how to file law suits.
