Patent attorney Jerry Liu was born in Atlanta to immigrants from Taiwan. He graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgia Tech in Electrical Engineering, then attended Emory University law school on a full scholarship, graduating with honors. After passing the rigorous patent law bar exam (as well as the regular bar exam) on his first try, he embarked on a legal career working for top corporate law firms and serving as in-house counsel to major corporations in Atlanta. During this time, for 17+ years, he taught as an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech's school of public policy in the evenings, and also taught courses in Hong Kong and Japan. He is currently a law partner at Hill, Kirtscher & Wharton and is a named inventor on over 20 patents. In this exclusive interview, Jerry Liu discusses his background and career progression to inform viewers of what it takes to be a successful practicing attorney in the area of intellectual property law.
