Commercial real estate careers make great second careers for lawyers, as they take advantage of the skill sets developed in law school and law practice. If you're a lawyer who hates being a lawyer or you're a law graduate interested in real estate, this area of commercial real estate careers may be appealing to you.

I'm Marc Luber, the founder of JD Careers Out There ("JDCOT") and the JD Refugee class. I'm a lawyer who has worked in alternative career paths for lawyers - first in the music industry, then as a legal recruiter, and today via JDCOT and my JD RefugeeĀ® coaching programs. I've been helping lawyers with their careers since 2003.

My interview guest today is Josh Gorin, a lawyer who works as a Corporate Real Estate Advisor at Savills Studley, where he's a senior VP and the branch manager for the Los Angeles office. Josh decided during law school in Chicago that he was interested in alternative careers for lawyers. He networked his way in to law graduate jobs in commercial real estate and has worked in that industry since law school graduation. He tells us why this path is rewarding.

Josh explains that organizations hire him to evaluate their real estate to determine a more efficient and less expensive way to operate their business. His clients, ranging from law firms to entertainment companies, may be considering anything from renewing a lease to relocating their offices, having their entire real estate portfolio examined, or evaluating whether to buy, lease, develop, or sell real estate.

In the full interview (available to JDCOT website subscribers and my coaching clients), Josh tells me everything you would want to know about leaving law for law degree careers in commercial real estate - from the different types of jobs out there to what skills they each require, how to break in, how to succeed and more.
