FULL TEXT OF VIDEO:
As the publisher of Attorney at Law magazine, I have met several other intellectual property attorneys that have told me that they've really, literally never even been in court. Can you talk about that a little bit? That's very true of a lot of intellectual property attorneys. I mentioned before that in order to even take the exam to get licensed before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, you have to have a hard science background of some sort and you know as educated and intelligent as they are, people who get biology and engineering backgrounds aren't generally dynamic public speakers. So, they don't want to go in the courtroom. They don't thrive that pressure and that rolling on your feet environment. I, on the other hand, came out of law school, and after my clerkship on the Court of Appeals, went straight into a litigation environment. I went straight into the public defender's office, where I was in court all day, every day and I got a comfort level with being in court. It's hard replicate for any civil attorney, much less an intellectual property attorney. Civil cases just don't tend to go to trial like criminal cases do. So, I was in the court all the time. My comfort level there is hard to match, and it's continued through my civil practice. My first law firm gave me a lot more leeway with going to trial than other attorneys of the same level because I had so much courtroom experience before I got there. And when it comes down to protecting intellectual property, the services I can I provide for my clients now are a lot deeper than what you'll get from somebody else for the most part. Not only can I apply for your trademark, not only can I get you registered, but afterwards, I'm capable of defending it. I can defend you if somebody accuses you, the client, of infringing other people's works, and I can defend your own trademarks and patents in trial because I do it all the time. So, that really sets me apart from a lot of intellectual property attorneys. I can take your case from start to finish, help you get it registered. Once we get it registered, I can help you protect it, taking it all the way to a jury trial if that's what's necessary. And you just don't find that with a lot of other intellectual property attorneys. They are well-versed in doing the registration, but not so good, not so skilled or experienced, and don't even want to. A lot of them don't go into court. I do. That's a big part of my practice, and it's something that's unique about what I do.
